Jewels seized from bus passenger

Officials seized gold jewellery estimated at Rs. 47 lakh from a bus passenger near Keezhvelur near here on Friday.

Sources said that a flying squad of officials led by Deputy Tahsildar Rajagopalan was conducting vehicle checks near the Sandhai Thoppu area of Keezhvelur when they searched a private bus from Nagapattinam to Tiruvarur.

During the search, they stumbled on a hand bag containing gold jewellery totally weighing 1,765 grams from the bag in the possession of S. Ramesh Kumar of Chinna Sourashtra Street, Tiruchi, and who did not have valid papers or documents to the items he was carrying. After seizing the gold jewellery, the flying squad handed that over to the Keezhvelur Constituency Returning Officer Amudha Vijayarangan who deposited them in the Keezhvelur Sub Treasury. Further investigation was under way.

The cost of the seized jewellery was estimated to be Rs. 47 lakh, the officials said.
