The one-day bandh called by fringe right-wing groups against the marriage of N. Ashitha and Shakeel Ahamed on Saturday did not evoke any response in the town. Public transport including Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses, private buses, auto-rickshaws and maxi-cabs plied as usual. Commercial activities on all major roads including Pete Beedhi, V.V. Road, 100 ft. Road, Rajendra Prasad Road and Double Road went on as usual. Fuel stations, cinema halls, hotels and other commercial establishments remained open throughout the town since morning. There was no sign of response to the bandh call, police officials said.
Arrested
Meanwhile, the police have detained a few persons after they burnt tyres at Sri Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Circle, Holalu Circle and at some other places.
Members of BJP, Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad, who are opposing the marriage, staged a protest near the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Saturday. Tension prevailed for a while at the spot when a Muslim youth started videographing their protest. The police detained him for interrogation.
