45-day annual ban on fishing begins in Tamil Nadu

Fisheries department sources told DC that this ban has been in force for the last 15 years.

Nagapattinam: More than 50,000 fishermen of Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Pudukkottai districts with thousands of mechanised and country-made boats will remain on shore for the next 45 days from Friday, following the 45-day fishing ban in order to allow fish breeding.

Fisheries department sources told DC that this ban has been in force for the last 15 years. This year, it will be in force till May 29. During the ban period, fishermen will repair their boats and other accessories like fishnets, etc.

N. Kuttaiyandi and R Ramadevan, president and vice president, respectively, of the mechanised boat owners association of Sellanenthal-Jagadapatnam in Pudukkottai district appealed to the Tamil Nadu Government to double the compensation amount of Rs 4,000 given to each fishermen during the ban period, besides sanctioning Rs 1 lakh each to mechanised boat owners to undertake repairs and renovation.
