Sculptures created by renowned international artists and locals will soon be on display at public spaces in Lutyens’ Delhi, the New Delhi Municipal Council said on Friday.
Naresh Kumar, the NDMC’s chairperson, said the civic body would soon invite artists — 75 per cent of whom will be non-Indians, while the rest will be Indians — to make sculptures on Indian culture and heritage. The international artists will work with their Indian counterparts, said Mr. Kumar.
The plan would be worked out within a month, with the Lalit Kala Akademi expected to be roped in for help.
The project is aimed at improving the artistic landscape of the NDMC area, and to give its parks a makeover.
Fortnight-long camp
Mr. Kumar made this announcement at an event to mark the end of a fortnight-long sculpture camp that the NDMC and Lalit Kala Akademi had organised at the park in front of Shri Laxmi Narayan temple.
Nine artists had produced a sculpture each using black stone, and measuring about 10 feet in size.
The artists included Deepak Rasaily, Vinod A. Patel and Deepak K. Khatri from Gujarat; Bupat Dudi and Bhupesh Kanwaria from Rajasthan; Ganesh Gohain and Adwait Gadanayak from Odisha; S. Gopi Nath from Karnataka; and Sriniwas Reddy from Andhra Pradesh.
Among the themes they chose were ‘mountain and cloud’, ‘the mirror’, ‘a tribute to Delhi’ and ‘knowledge tree’.
These nine sculptures will be displayed at prominent parks in the NDMC area.
