MOSCOW (Sputnik) – UK tax and customs authorities have not been doing enough to counter tax fraud, which results in losses of some $23 billion a year for the British government, according to a parliamentary report published Friday.
"HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is not doing enough to tackle tax fraud, which accounts for at least £16 billion of uncollected tax each year," the Tackling Tax Fraud report by the House of Commons Committee of Public Accounts reads.
The UK committee urged HMRC to outline a clear strategy for fighting tax fraud, as its report on current achievements was "too confusing."
The parliamentary report also slammed the UK tax authorities for not tackling tax fraud by the wealthy.
The findings follow the April 3 leak of the so-called Panama Papers, which have exposed the alleged involvement of a number of world leaders and their circles, including British Prime Minister David Cameron’s late father, in offshore schemes.
