Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake on Tuesday said a district-level Ambedkar Bhavan would be constructed here at a cost of Rs. 3.5 crore.

He was speaking after inaugurating the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of B.R. Ambedkar, organised by the district administration. He also inaugurated the taluk-level Ambedkar Bhavan, which was renovated at a cost of Rs. 44 lakh, on the occasion.

Mr. Sorake said the government had already sanctioned the amount for the construction of the district-level Ambedkhar Bhavan. The district administration has been tasked with identifying land for the same.

He said it was necessary for every citizen to know about the life, achievements and ideals of Dr. Ambedkar, who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the weaker sections of society and to abolish caste-based discrimination.

He said it was Dr. Ambedkar who drew up a fair Constitution, and elected representatives and bureaucrats should work hard to realise his dream for the country.

Presiding over the function, Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, said the authorities were trying to get an additional sanction of Rs. 2 crore to establish necessary facilities at the bhavan.

Deputy Commissioner R. Vishal administered an oath on creation of a harmonious and equitable society on the occasion. Meenaxi M. Bannanje, president of the Udupi City Municipal Council, Sandhya Kumari, vice-president of CMC, Veronica Carnelio, chairperson of Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd., Priyanka Mary Francis, CEO of the zilla panchayat, and others were present.
