The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge received a royal welcome upon landing Thursday in Bhutan, taking a detour from India to visit the neighboring mountain kingdom.
The couple tried their hand at Bhutan’s national sport, archery, with Duchess Kate channeling her inner Katniss, doing her best attempt to take aim at a brightly decorated wooden target – before erupting in laughter at the result.
Despite a bit of coaching, Prince William didn’t fare much better with his attempt.
The duchess wore a colorful violet wrap skirt made in London from Bhutanese fabric by a weaver well known in Thimphu.
The royal couple touched down hours earlier in Paro, Bhutan at one of the world’s most dangerous airports, which barely sits a mile above sea level and is surrounded by steep cliffs.
The duke and duchess received a ceremonial greeting on the tarmac filled with Buddhist monks, traditional dancers and musicians. They then headed to a 13th-century royal fortress to meet with Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema, often dubbed the “William and Kate of the Himalayans.”
Like their royal counterparts, Bhutan's king and queen are quite popular in their nation. They also recently became first-time parents, welcoming a son in February.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's own children, 2-year-old Prince George and his infant sister, Princess Charlotte, are back home in England while their parents visit abroad. NBC News's Keir Simmons reported that Duchess Kate told one group on the tour that she is missing her children and will definitely bring them next time. The couple will return to India on Saturday to conclude their visit with a stop at the Taj Mahal.
