I'll take steps to stop GAIL project in state, Jayalalithaa says

In February, the Supreme Court upheld a Madras high court order giving the nod to GAIL to lay natural gas pipelines in seven districts. The top court had dismissed the state government's objections, terming it populist. In March, the SC rejected the state government's review plea as well.

Campaigning in the largely agrarian district of Dharmapuri, AIADMK general secretary and chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday brought up the GAIL project issue, extending an assurance that she would initiate talks with the Union government to stop it in the state. Dharmapuri is one of the seven districts through which the natural gas pipeline will pass.
"My government is always working for people's welfare. I will take steps to stop the GAIL project which will affect farmers," she said.
In February, the Supreme Court upheld a Madras high court order (challenged by Tamil Nadu), giving the nod to Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) to lay natural gas pipelines through seven districts. The SC had dismissed the state government's objections, terming it populist. In March, the SC rejected the state government's review plea as well.
Explaining her stand on the project Jayalalithaa said her government took several steps, including organising farmers peace committee meetings and later moving the HC to get a stay to stop the project.
She was addressing the huge gathering near Nallampalli on the outskirts of Dharmapuri.
