The anniversary of the Tiruchi-Vedaranyam Salt Satyagraha march was celebrated at the Salt Satyagraha memorial stupi at the entrance to the Dr. Rajan Bangalow here on Wednesday.

D. Sakthi Selvaganapathy, general secretary of the Tiruchi–Vedaranyam Salt Satyagraha Dandi Yatra committee, said the State government should enforce total dry law across Tamil Nadu. He said the celebration of the anniversary was aimed at sensitising the present-day youth to the ordeals and sufferings of the freedom fighters.

N.R. Sathyamurthy, Deputy secretary of the committee, said the Dr. Rajan Bungalow in the Tiruchi and the memorial at Agasthiyampalli near Vedaranyam should be converted into museum as a mark of respect to the freedom fighters. Azhagu Ramanujam, a senior writer, K. Dakshinamurthy, S.P. Dhandayuthapani, K. Sambandam, and Siva Shanmuga Vadivel — all freedom fighters spoke on the role of the late Rajaji who led the salt satyagraha march from the Dr. Rajan Bungalow here to Vedaranyam about eight-and-a-half decades ago.

A ‘bhajan’ was held in front of the bungalow and floral tributes paid to memorial.
