After a 2-year-old girl was found wandering the streets in South Ogden, Utah Tuesday morning, police were on the search for her parents.
Fox 13 reports a passerby spotted the little girl in her pajamas around 1:30 a.m. The girl was then taken to the police station as officers worked to identify her parents.
“We couldn’t get a lot out of her because of her age,” South Ogden Police Sgt. Trent Olsen said. “Officers attempted to find porch lights that were on, anybody home, anybody who looked, we actually knocked. Several doors.”
When there were no solid leads before 8:00 a.m., the officers began canvassing the area.
“We were very concerned when we didn’t get a call by 8 o’clock in the morning that there could actually be a health issue, with one of the parents… which is why we started our door to door active search,” Olsen said.
Just before noon, officers did find the girls parents, about a quarter of a block from where she was found.
The girl’s grandmother, Laura Marsh, said the girl's parents worked late that night and didn't know she was missing.
“When [my daughter] came home last night, she just went to bed,” Marsh said. “And she didn’t even know she was missing yet. So she went to sleep, and woke up and that’s when they couldn’t find her.”
The South Ogden Police are investigating to see if criminal charges will be filed, and the Division of Child and Family Services will determine whether the child can return home. She was still in DCFS custody Tuesday night.
Marsh said the situation has been devastating to her daughter.
“She’s worried that’s what people are going to do is think that she’s a bad mom and that she allowed this to happen,” Marsh said. “She didn’t. She was working hard last night.”
