Mangaluru International Airport records 28% growth in passenger traffic growth in FY 15-16

MANGALURU: Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) of Airports Authority of India at Kenjar here has achieved a record in handling maximum number of passengers for 2015-16. The 16,74,343 lakh passengers handled from April 2015 to March 2016 represents a total growth of 40% in international passengers and 21% in domestic passenger movement, for an overall growth of 28% compared to the last fiscal year, J T Radhakrishna, airport director, MIA stated.
MIA incidentally in 2014-15 had handled 13,07,083 passengers including 4,77,716 international and 8,29,367 domestic passengers.
This is the highest ever number of passengers to have travelled in a (fiscal) year in the history of this airport that had handled 8,91,122 passengers including 6,26,500 domestic passengers in 2011-12; 10,43,386 passengers including 7,64,338 domestic in 2012-13 and 12,83,367 passengers including 8,41,376 domestic in 2013-14).
The number of passengers travelling from MIA has doubled from 2010-11 to 2015-16. While 8,45,700 passengers including 5,91,029 domestic and 2,54,671 international passengers had used MIA during 2010-11, the numbers in 2015-16 was 16,74,343 passengers including 10,07,491 domestic and 6,66,852 domestic passengers. This is also first time that the number of domestic passengers travelling from the airport crossed the 10 lakh passenger mark.
Mangaluru International Airport is the 12th largest airport in terms of handling international passengers in India after Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram, Ahmedabad and Trichy airports. With more flights scheduled to be introduced in domestic and international sectors in the coming days, the movement of passengers from MIA is expected to grow in line with traffic trends across the country, he noted.
