Juan Martin del Potro will play on clay for the first time since 2013 after announcing he will compete in both Munich and Madrid.

Del Potro revealed on his Facebook page that he will make his return on the red surface at the BMW Open in April, followed by the Madrid Open in May.

It is the first time the Argentine will appear at back-to-back tournaments since making his return from an 11-month injury layoff in February. Del Potro underwent surgery on his wrist in June last year and featured in only two tournaments in 2015.

"I am really happy to tell you that Munich and Madrid will be my first two clay tournaments after a long time," Del Potro confirmed on his official Facebook page. "I've been practising on clay for a week now after years of not playing on this surface and I will keep getting better in the next few days.

"Rehab on my wrist is going as planned. Although I must be patient I am thrilled to be able to confirm two tournaments in a row, the first time I do this since I came back to tennis."

The 27-year-old has not played on clay since the 2013 Rome Masters, where he lost to Benoit Paire in the last 16. Del Potro is currently ranked No.339 in the world and played at Delray Beach, Indian Wells and the Miami Open so far this season.
