Left for dead, baby Poonam makes incredible recovery
Four months after an emaciated baby was found abandoned outside a BMC maternity centre in Prabhadevi, the toddler has made a remarkable recovery at JJ Hospital. The little wonder, Poonam, was discharged on Tuesday and placed in the care of Matunga’s Shraddhanand Women’s Home, which also provides shelter to orphans.

The child was only one-year-old when she was abandoned by her parents, who are yet to be identified. When she was found on Dec 8, she weighed only 2.5 kg, onefourth of what she should have. The police rushed her to JJ Hospital and named her Poonam.

After Mirror reported the case on Dec 31, people and organisations from across the city opened their hearts, offering money, clothes, and other assistance for her care. “Poonam is doing well, she weighs 6 kg now,” said Dr Bela Verma, a senior paediatrician at JJ Hospital. Poonam will stay at the Matunga shelter for three months till her name is included in an adoption list.
