Lucknow: The Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany (BSIP) is now the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences.
The 70-year-old research institute was renamed on Tuesday following approval of the ministry of science and technology. Besides botany, researchers will now conduct studies on climate, archaeology, geology and other sciences, all under one roof.
This will encourage inter-disciplinary research and help in finding solutions to problems like prediction and impact of climate changes on water and food crisis, among others.
"The institute will not only specialize in palaeobotany but also in other dimension of science like geo-chronology, an important branch of science that helps find changes in vegetation, sediments, etc," said BSIP director Prof Sunil Bajpai. It helps to find the chronology of such changes helpful to find reasons behind melting of glaciers, global warming and other climatic changes.
The branch of palaeogeography will also be covered to study land degradation, tsunami and other environmental changes.
