Known always as John, Dudleigh Oscar Topp was born in Hove, the son of a bank manager. He had a younger brother Patrick who became a school teacher. A practising Roman Catholic, he was educated at the Xaverian College in Brighton and then went on to King’s College London’s Strand Campus, and so to Charing Cross Hospital, where he qualified in 1949.
