The Singam actor isn't afraid of doing offbeat films

The South Indian film industry is rather inclined towards formulaic films. Which means actors like Suriya get the short end of the stick. The handsome star has never shied away from doing radically different films, but not all have worked in his favour. Now, his upcoming movie is another sci fi experiment, titled 24 and its teaser, album and trailer is out. So let's see why Suriya is a gem of Kollywood and South Indian cinema through these five films... Perazhagan

This movie was released way back in 2004. and for that time, this film was very much off the beaten path. Perazhagan was a film about people with physical disabilities, who fall in love. Suriya featured in a double role in the film, one of which was a hunchback! Not only that, he also had protruding front teeth, making his character Chinna a very peculiar and unconventional hero. Frankly, the amount of charm, humour and energy that Suriya displayed cannot be imitated by anyone else. People immediately fell in love with the intrepid Chinna and the movie became a massive hit. Ghajini

One of the most memorable films of the handsome actor's career, Ghajini was a story of revenge, with a big psychological twist. Suriya played the role of Sanjay Ramasamy, a man who forgets everything in just fifteen minutes! Now imagine if such an invalid man set out to avenge the death of his loved one and decided to take down an entire crime syndicate. The absurdity and awesomeness of it all was truly something else. Suriya proved what he is capable of as he pulled off this really hard role so naturally. In a way, he inspired Aamir Khan to do the remake in Hindi.

Maattrraan

If Vikram has done painstaking transformations, Suriya has not been far behind in performing very different characters. This thriller film is a good example. The Singam actor played conjoined twins, Akhilan and Vimalan, who were both joined at the shoulders. Now who has the audacity to pull off characters which are twins, are conjoined and have polar opposite personalities? Nobody could have dreamed of doing this other than Suriya, who is always game for a challenge. The actor was the life of the movie, even if the bad plot and direction pulled it down.

Massu Engira Masilamani

As the title suggests, this one was an out and out mass film, with a spooky twist. Suriya played Masilamani, a con man who suffers a head injury in an accident and starts to see ghosts everywhere. Throughout the film, he communicates with ghosts and helps them on to the afterlife. A very interesting and difficult character to play, it had to look convincing and not seem flimsy. Suriya managed to do that brilliantly. He also played a ghost himself in the flick, with an evil agenda. Overall, it was Suriya who raised the standard of the whole film.

Pasanga 2: Haiku

After seeing Suriya in this film, you will wonder if there is anything he cannot do. He is proficient with action, drama, romance, comedy and emotion too. The actor plays a compassionate child psychologist in this film, who helps parents of children with special needs understand that they should not force them to be normal. His act as this super mature and realistic character will pull at the strings of your heart. His bonding with kids in the movie makes it a truly emotional experience.

Now again, he is going to play three or more possible roles in 24, and one of them as the main villain. When it comes to versatility and doing something different, nobody can best Suriya. This is why he is considered to be an amazing actor and is loved by all.
