MUMBAI: The overhead wire snapping between Borivli and Kandivli stations on Monday morning and the subsequent delays in the train schedule affected students appearing for their Mumbai University exams. Several students, especially the ones who had their centres in the western suburbs, reached up to an hour late for their exams.
At one of the colleges in Malad, the authorities decided to start the exam at 11.15 am to avoid confusion.
“We were getting calls till 12 noon from colleges seeking permission to allow students. Since the train problem was severe, we asked all colleges to allow students and asked them to give extra time too,” said in-charge controller of examinations, Deepak Wasave. The university conducted exams for 231 papers on Monday, of which 98 were scheduled in the morning slot. Among the important exams were TYB Com, MA, M sc too.
At a few other centres in the eastern suburbs, final year TYB Com students claimed that the exam started at least half an hour late as the college took time to download the university question papers. At a college in Mulund, TYB Com students got the question paper 40 minutes late. A college official said that the taxation paper ran into nine pages and there were close to 700 students in the centre. “It takes time to print all the pages for so many students. The university should limit the number of students at each centre to 500,” said the official.
