They locked the entrances to the academic buildings at 8am on Sunday.

Many of the locks were broken towards the noon but no classes were held.

Examinations were, however, held as scheduled.

The protesting students alleged the locks were broken at the instructions of acting proctor Nur Mohammad.

He, however, refuted the allegation and told bdnews24.com, “Neither the proctorial body nor the police broke the locks. The general students did it … I was around.”

The agitated students criticised the government for it allegedly slack response following Nazim’s murder.

“If someone speaks ill of the prime minister, they are hunted down. But a man was killed in broad daylight but the killers are not being caught. This is the law enforcement agencies’ weakness,” said a demonstrator named Tanmay.

They later brought out a procession on the university campus and announced further protest programmes.

Nazim was ambushed on Wednesday night at the capital’s Sutrapur while on his way home from the university.

Assailants attacked him with machetes before shooting him dead.

Police have filed a case but are yet to make any headway.

Nazim, who had moved to capital Dhaka from the eastern district of Sylhet a few months ago, was involved with Ganajagaran Mancha, the popular movement raised to ensure maximum punishment for 1971 war criminals.

He was vocal on the social media against religious fanatics.

The international community, including the United Nations, the US and the European Union, has condemned the murder.
