MONICKA Vadera may be Robert Vadera’s first cousin, but her wedding to Pune entrepreneur Tehseen Poonawalla in the Capital last week was a political blowout. Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka played the part of family and sat through the rituals, Rahul Gandhi flew in from a day of campaigning in Assam. Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor, Salman Kurshid, Manish Tewari, Kamal Nath, Motilal Vohra and even the BJP’s LK Advani (just days before he was bereaved), Varun Gandhi, Sudhanshu Trivedi, actor Ravi Kishen and Amar Singh were present—making it no less a political coup too. Watching Priyanka play the dutiful daughter-in-law to the hilt is news; not too long ago Robert had issued a public statement saying he was distancing himself from his family for milking the Gandhi name. She also spent ample time chatting with Gandhi bete noir Varun at the reception.

WITH the Bombay High Court suggesting IPL matches be shifted out of Maharashtra due to water scarcity in the state, BCCI’s mandarins, in a bid to avoid this supposedly unpleasant situation, have started a desperate search for alternative water resources to maintain the Wankhede ground. And guess who has come to their rescue? The Royal Western India Turf Club, it seems. Your diarist has learnt that former chief of the BCCI and Mumbai Cricket Association Sharad Pawar sent an SOS to Vijay Shirke and former RWITC chief Khushroo Dhunjibhoy to help the cricket associations tide over the crisis. Pawar asked the Turf Club to provide Wankhede Stadium with surplus water if available at the former’s Sewage Treatment Plant at Mahalaxmi Race Course. The RWITC uses this water to maintain its racetrack and since the racing season is about to end, it seems to have readily agreed to share. (Though it would be fair to say no one refuses the Maratha strongman a favour when he seeks one.) It’s now upto the BCCI’s legal eagles to convince the HC that potable water is not being snatched from the water-starved city, instead a eco-friendly solution is at hand.

DELHI - based designer brothers Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra have had their eyes set on Mumbai for too long. They’ve just opened their second store in Mumbai (the first is in Bandra)—a men’s-only, modern-meets-colonial space— near Lion’s Gate. It’s ensconced right next to Tina Tahiliani’s multidesigner boutique. With Tahiliani extending her boutique and adding on a men’s floor, the area that’s known as Old Custom’s House will soon be called Mumbai’s Saville Row it seems. “Or slaughterhouse,” laughs Nikhil of the designer duo, at his opening. “With so much wedding wear for men around, that’s what I’d like to call it”.

ENDING affairs in police stations and courtrooms isn’t just the territory of the denizens of the film world. A socialite’s open marriage to a corporate gent wasn’t a hindrance to her romance with a former model. The two lovers—with their respective spouses in tow—went about the city’s parties and events rather nonchalantly. Until the lovers split. Then, the socialite and her husband connived and filed a police complaint against the lover for cheating them of money. Of course once tempers died down, everything else did too.

ANIL Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan has just let out his first look for his debut film, a Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra tragic romance that releases later this year. Harshvadhan looks remarkably like his father—tousled hair, rugged beard etc. Even though the film’s shoot schedule is done, Harshvardhan is still in his lovelorn mode. He continues to wear a long and “tramp-like” beard in keeping with his catastrophic character. His friends — several young female models friends we mean — are obviously miffed. They want the lad to scrub up, but the young Kapoor prefers to be scruffy for a little bit more. The ladies call him “just mad”, while stories of him being a troublemaker in school abound. This is probably why the craggy image-- it goes with his rough-andtumble reputation.
