Mangaluru: A man with rotator cuff tear in the left shoulder successfully underwent a minimally invasive surgery at the exclusive treatment facility for shoulder and sports injury at the KMC Hospital.
Santosh D'Souza, 38, who is a driver, suffered rotator cuff tear in his left shoulder which hindered his ability to lift the shoulder. Pain killers proved ineffective.
The medical team at the KMC Hospital headed by Dr Aravind M and assisted by Dr Vineeth G performed arthroscopic supraspinatus repair on the patient.

The anaesthesia team was headed by Dr Rammurthy M assisted by Dr Rashmi. The patient underwent minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to repair the damage and was discharged after two days.
On four weeks follow-up review, he was able to lift his shoulder with ease. D'Souza is undergoing physical rehabilitation to get back to his normal activity levels.
Dr Aravind, shoulder and sports injury surgeon, KMC Hospital said: "Tear of the rotator cuff of the shoulder is an extremely painful disabling condition. Although tears can occur as a result of a traumatic injury, many tears occur gradually with no specific injury. Arth roscopic surgery is minimally invasive surgery / keyhole surgery where advanced instruments are used to inspect the affected area, to visualize and monitor the extent of damage. Accordingly, the surgery is undertaken in a limited space."
The major advantages of minimally invasive surgery are minimal scars, better precision of surgery and speedy recovery of the patient. In this case, the patient was discharged in two days after the surgery, the doctor said.
Dr Anand Venugopal, medical superintendent, KMC Hospital said: " The case of D'Souza was complicated as he was not able to lift his shoulder. This procedure is extremely demanding and requires expertise."
