“I have lost my mother. I have no words to express what the feeling is,” said Sahib Kaur.

SITTING IN the front seat of a golf cart, Sahib Kaur chokes several times. The bhog ceremony of her mother Chand Kaur has just ended at the sprawling Bhaini Sahib Namdhari sect headquarters. The number of Namdhari sewaks running along her cart has been increased as her mother was shot in the heavily guarded dera on Monday.

Entering the palatial bungalow, Sahib Kaur breaks down again. Even as the blame game is going on between her two cousins — Satguru Uday Singh and Thakur Dalip Singh — Sahib Kaur, the only daughter of the late Satguru Jagjit Singh and Chand Kaur, also the only legal heir of the couple, has chosen to be silent.

“I have lost my mother. I have no words to express what the feeling is,” said Sahib Kaur in an exclusive conversation with The Indian Express. “Was she only my mother? Didn’t she love him (Dalip Singh) equally? She did. She had loved us all equally since our childhood. I too suspect that it was him who got her killed,” said Sahib Kaur.

Sahib Kaur lives with her husband Jagtar Singh and son Jai Singh at Bhaini Sahib. Insiders say that at one point of time, Chand Kaur wanted Jai Singh, her own grandson, to be Jagjit Singh’s successor.

On Saturday, Thakur Dalip Singh had said that he too suspected that Uday Singh and Jagtar Singh got Chand Kaur eliminated as they feared losing gaddi had the clan been reunited. He, however, supported his sister Sahib Kaur and said that she “truly deserves” to be Satguru and take over gaddi of Jagjit Singh. “Why can’t a woman be her father’s successor?” he asked.

Festive offer

Asked about her reaction to Dalip’s statement that ‘Sahib Kaur would always remain her sister’, she said, “In what way is he considering me a sister? In what capacity he said this? I do not think he actually does. He does not consider Uday Singh as Satguru. Now in this war my mother has become the victim. Those who killed my mother are not going to remain happy.”

Questions are also being raised about Jagtar Singh, husband of Sahib Kaur. She, however, said, “I reiterate what my Satguru Uday Singh has said. We are with him. I suspect Dalip’s involvement in my mother’s murder.”
