Woman killed for accepting daughter’s intercaste marriage

Madurai: A man allegedly hacked his sister-in-law to death for giving the green signal to her daughter's intercaste marriage after initially opposing it. The incident took place in Sayalkudi in Ramanathapuram district on Friday.
The victim was identified as Poonkodi, wife of Muthuramalingam of Nombakulam village near Sayalkudi. Police said Nagavalli, 24, daughter of the couple had fallen in love with Kannan, 29, of Kadukusandhai Chathiram also in Sayalkudi and married him more than a year ago.
Since the girl hailed from the thevar community, her parents opposed the marriage with Kannan as he belonged to the yadava community even though his parents accepted their union. Muthuramalingam's brother Ganeshan and his sister's son Manikandan had vehemently opposed the match.
A few days ago the couple had their first child. Poonkodi who heard about it was elated and took her daughter and grandchild home. Kannan too started visiting his wife frequently after she went to her maternal home.
On coming to know that Nagavalli had returned home, Ganeshan informed Manikandan, who resides in Villapuram in Madurai. On Friday night, Manikandan went to Poonkodi's house with five others and picked up a quarrel with her and demanded why she had accepted her daughter back. Poonkodi told him that it was none of his business. Angered by this he drew out a sickle and hacked Poonkodi, resulting in her instant death.
Sayalkudi police have registered a case and are on the lookout for Manikandan and the others.
