Nandish (24), a farmer was injured when he was attacked by a leopard, in Tadasanahalli village, Shikaripur taluk.
The incident occurred when Neelamma, a shepherdess, had taken sheep out to graze on the outskirts of the village. A leopard came in from the adjacent forest, attacked the herd and killed one of the sheep.
When Neelamma cried for help, Nandish, who was working on his agricultural land nearby, tried to scare the leopard away and was attacked in the process. He sustained injuries on forehead and neck.
The villagers said that Nandish wielded a stick at the leopard in self-defence, causing it to run away.
The Forest Department personnel combed the maize fields and the forest nearby but could not trace the animal.
Range Forest Officer Chandrakanth Hipparagi had told presspersons that the forest personnel would patrol the area at night. Residents have been asked not to venture out in to the area adjacent to the forest by themselves, he said.
