MUMBAI: For the last time, EMU rake that is compatible to run on 1500 V Direct Current (DC) plied on the Indian Railways between Kurla and CST on Harbour line on Saturday.
CR’s Harbour and trans-harbour line will switch to 25 KV Alternating Current (AC) traction on April 10.
DC traction was introduced on Mumbai suburban on February 3, 1925 on Harbour line between CST-Kurla.
Except Harbour and Transharbour, all the electrified section on Indian Railways run on AC current.
The yellow and marooned colour 9-car rake was decorated with flowers at Sanpada carshed. Railfans also were present to spruce up the last DC rake. Some compartments also had old photographs of railways system and rakes displayed.
The rake was welcomed with music played by a special band on all stations.
Central Railway's general manager SK Sood , who also took the journey said, "It is an emotional and historic occasion. The coaches of these rake will be preserved in various divisions, including National Railway Museum in New Delhi."
CR had offered Railfans an opportunity to travel in this rake by buying a ticket for Rs 10,000 but there were no takers.
The train departed from Kurla at 11.36 pm and reach CST at 12.24 am.
