The beginning of New Year or Gudi Padwa has brought in lot of good news for Thanekars. On Saturday, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) inaugurated various projects that will benefit the citizens in future.

On April 9, Thane's guardian minister Eknath Shinde did bhumi pujan of four projects in the city. Among these projects is a parking plaza that will come up near Jupiter hospital, Eastern Express Highway. This plaza will be built on an area of 1357.23 sq meter and can take care of 2500 vehicles at a time. "This will solve the parking and traffic problem as many people park the vehicles on the service road causing traffic jams," said a TMC official. There was also bhumi pujan of the 24 meter Shil-Diva road. Another project is a holistic and spiritual center at Kavesar, which will also have a meditation room. "This centre to help people experience inner peace and de-stress in today's fast-paced world and will appeal to their spiritual side," he said.

On Saturday, bhumi pujan of a new fire station was done at Kalwa-Kharegaon, which will also have 20 residences for the staff. There are five fire stations in Thane – Pachpakhadi, Jawaharbaug, Balkum, Kopri and Mumbra and these stations are located at far distance from each other. So, in case of a fire, it takes the fire brigade lot of time to reach the spot. "This new station will take care of fire incidents in Kalwa and facilitate quick redressal," he added.

Even the inauguration of the newly-built toilet facility for women at Gaodevi took place on Saturday. The TMC has been quite aggressive about making the city defecation-free and building community toilets. "Most of the above projects will be constructed on PPP (public private partnership) model while some by the TMC solely," said Sandeep Malvi, public relations officer, TMC.

On April 8 on the occasion of Gudhi Padwa Thane got its SRA (Slum rehabilitation authority) office in the city at Khevra circle. "With SRA coming to Thane, now the rehabilitation of slum programs will gain momentum in the city," said Eknath Shinde, guardian minister, Thane, during the inauguration of the office.
