Ahmedabad: A special TADA court completed hearings and reserved its order in the trial of Umarmiya Bukhari alias Mammumiya Panjumiya in connection with the Radhika Gymkhana massacre in which nine people lost their lives on August 3, 1992.
The shootout was the fallout of the rivalry for bootlegging involving the Abdul Latif gang and the Hansraj Trivedi gang.
Mammumiya was implicated in this case on charges of supplying arms and conspiracy after he was brought to India in 2005. During the trial, the prosecution examined eight witnesses.
Earlier, 21 persons were tried in this case. The court convicted nine and acquitted the rest in 2002. Even the Supreme Court upheld the conviction. Those convicted in this case are still behind bars.
The attack on the gymkhana involved with automatic weapons including automatic assault rifles and revolvers.
When extradited from Dubai, Mammumiya was implicated in 20 different cases. The prosecution has not been able to establish its case in any of these cases till date, with him either being acquitted or discharged in more than a dozen cases.
Earlier this week, Gujarat high court rejected Mammumiya's request to revoke Section 268 of CrPC, restricting a prisoner's movement outside jail. He has been lodged in a prison in Porbandar.
