Family of Sylvya Reena, the 23-year-old Deloitte employee who committed suicide last month, has levelled allegations against the police while demanding the arrest of all accused for abetment of suicide.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, Reena’s family narrated the sequence of events that led to her suicide, squarely blaming Denzil Singham and his family. Mr. Singham, the family claimed, had cheated Ms. Reena with promises of marriage during their five years of courtship.

He avoided marriage proposal

“Reena brought up the issue of marriage several times but Denzil kept avoiding it. She had helped him secure a job when he said he could not marry her due to lack of employment,” claimed Mary John, Reena’s mother.

The family said that Mr. Singham had arrived late evening at their residence to take Reena to his house on March 27. Around midnight the family received a call from their daughter who said she was at Medipally Police Station, confined and humiliated by Mr. Denzil’s family, Ms. John claimed. A few hours later, Reena committed suicide by hanging after the family had returned home. She blamed Mr. Singham and his family for the extreme step in a suicide note.

The Malkajigiri police registered a case of abetment of suicide against Mr. Singham’s family. He surrendered a few days later and was remanded in judicial custody. The family on Saturday demanded the arrest of other members of Mr. Singham’s family who are labelled accused in the case.

They also alleged that Medipally police are not willing to share video footage or information of what transpired at the police station on March 27, which they believe drove their daughter to suicide. The family also alleged that the police refused to acknowledge and act on a complaint against Mr. Singham’s family given by Reena.

When contacted, Medipally Inspector B. Naveen Reddy said that there is no video footage with the police as claimed by the family.

“We have no video footage of the events with us. Also, a complaint was not given to us that night. In fact, Reena’s mother told the police personnel on duty that they would come back the next day to sort the issue out,” he said.
