Villagers feel neglected by govt, to boycott election

Sivaganga: People from a village near Karaikudi in Sivaganga district have threatened to boycott the ensuing assembly election and hoisted black flags outside their homes, in protest against the non-provision of basic amenities for many years.
Sukkanendhal village is situated in Sakkottai union near Karaikudi. There are about 80 houses and 250 voters in the village.
Most of them are agricultural coolies who are living for many years, without even proper roads. The villagers said the road was not laid in their village for the past 20 years, due to which buses are operated to their area. So, all of them are forced to walk a distance of three km to catch a bus.
To make things worse, they have no potable water facility and have to walk on the road which is filled with potholes. They collect water from Pethavayal situated in neighbouring Pudukottai district. They are forced to collect water from distant places for all their needs. To add to their woes, there are no street lights and many of them live in huts, as no one was allotted houses under the government's 'green house' scheme.
Many petitions for better basic amenities submitted to the district collector and other authorities were also not heeded to. They have been making this demand to political parties who come for campaigning, but the promises are thrown to the wind after election.
