The Vishva Hindu Parishad will donate 1000 solar rechargeable lights to families in Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki.

Costing $30 each, the solar rechargeable lights are being brought in from China and will cost the religious organisation a total of $30,000.

President Jay Dayal hopes that this will give some relief to school children doing their evening studies while they wait for electricity to be restored.

The lights, which can also be used to charge mobile phones, will arrive in two weeks time by air freight and will be given to 1000 homes free of charge.

This is not the only form of assistance the local organisation, Vishva Hindu Parishad, had helped Fiji families with.

Mr. Dayal said they had been doing relief work from Day One of TC Winston.

They had been to over 2800 homes with relief packs and have also given out tarpaulins, clothes and have built 15 houses in Ba, he said.

“We have provided evacuation (shelters) right on the day of cyclone, and provided in excess of 2500 food packs, bottled water, clothes, tarpaulins, solar lights, cash, timber and tins to the victims,” he said.

“We are currently in discussion with our overseas affiliates in USA to come to Fiji to provide psychological and mental support to the victims.”

In addition, for those families receiving cargo from families abroad VHP has helped clear items from customs and delivers items to their door step, no matter where they live, he said.

The president said that the VHP team members from all over the country had been doing a tremendous amount of selfless work to help Fiji recover from the devastating effects of TC Winston. He thanked the organisation’s private donors from both Fiji and abroad.
