Francesca Schiavone produced a strong finish to see off fourth seed Alize Cornet and reach the quarter-finals of the Katowice Open in Poland on Thursday.

The former French Open champion shared two breaks apiece with her French opponent in the opening set before edging ahead after a tight tie-break.

But the 35-year-old stepped it up in the second set as she broke Cornet twice more and held firm on her own serve to complete a 7-6 (7/5) 6-1 victory.

Seventh seed Timea Babos overcame a poor start to beat Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic 1-6 6-4 7-5 and also book her place in the last eight.

Pauline Parmentier of France beat Briton Naomi Broady 6-4 7-5 and will next face home favourite Magda Linette, who beat Stefanie Voegele 1-6 7-5 6-2.
