Quorn makes a case for meat-free meals at Madrid Fusion Manila 2016

Eating meat without eating meat is not as impossible as it sounds. If you've been keeping an eye out for alternative protein sources other than the ever-dependable tofu, Monde Nissin Corporation is bringing in a meat alternative that you can use to make umami dishes like adobo.

A meat-free meal might not seem appetizing to non-vegetarians, but during the Madrid Fusion Manila 2016, curious attendees were surprised to find that a Quorn chicken nugget tastes exactly like a "real" chicken nugget.

Quorn enlisted the help of chefs Florabel Co-Yatco and Robby Goco to demonstrate the versatility of the product, as well as dispel the fears that meatless can't be savory.

Where's the beef?

The "meat" in Quorn is from fermented fungi (Fusarium venenatum) resulting in "mycoprotein." The fungus used is not a mushroom and shares more in common with truffles.

Aside from being a good source of protein and fiber, Quorn also has 85% less saturated fat than lean beef, and has zero cholesterol. The benefits, according to a report by The Guardian, has convinced non-vegetarians to make the switch and go meat-free.

Quorn additionally takes pride in being "better for the planet" and decreasing its carbon footprint

"Since we don't use any animals in the production of Quorn products, it actually uses less land and water," Monde Nissin Corporation media and corporate communications manager Gen Dela Peña said, "It uses 90% less land...and less carbon footprint, too."

"The vision for Quorn is not just for people's health. It's also for the planet," she added.

Although they have yet to settle the exact date, Dela Peña told GMA News Online that Quorn will be available in the market in 2016.  — RSJ, GMA News
