Ranigunj: On a day Narendra Modi accused her of "adjusting with corruption," Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee chose to stand by her party's Ranigunj MLA Sohrab Ali, who has been convicted for scrap iron theft.
Addressing meetings at Ranigunj and Pandaveswar, Mamata said that she had been forced to give her party's Ranigunj ticket to Ali's wife Nargis Banu.
"CPM had conspired against him and the court convicted Sohrab. But we respect the court verdict and that's why we have decided to give the ticket to his wife, Nargis Banu. You have to ensure that she wins," Mamata said.
"The main problem in Raniganj is subsidence and an expert comittee has been formed for resettlement and rehabiliation of people affected by it. Just after the polls, 30,000 houses will be built and people rehabiliated. The cabinet has also approved the scheme," she added.
Pandaveswar CPM MLA Gouranga Chatterjee alleged that Sohrab was involved in scrap iron theft when Mamata was the railway minister. "She is trying to befool everybody," he said.
