BRAVING THE scorching heat, the Polo Ground at Asansol in Burdwan district was packed to its capacity on Thursday much before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s helicopter landed on the temporary helipad nearby.

People cheered and raised slogans of ‘Har Har Modi’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. Baul singers were brought to the rally venue to regale the audience. Local MP Babul Supriyo also joined them.

Addressing the gathering, Modi said since so many people had gathered in spite of the heat, it is a clear sign that people wanted to oust the Trinamool Congress government. “Trinamool and Congress would think in days to come how many rogues they need to send over to Asansol to stop people from casting their votes. This gathering will rob Didi’s (Mamata Banerjee), Left’s and Sonia Gandhi’s sleep,” he claimed.

“It is a message from Bengal that people here want ‘mukti’ from the present dispensation, which has spoilt the glory of this state,” he added.

At one point during the rally, the crowd broke into an area earmarked for mediapersons and security personnel had to intervene to contain the crowd. When Supriyo tried to intervene, Modi stopped him and told the crowd if they didn’t behave, he would not resume his speech.
