Sitamarhi: A book shopkeeper, Sunil Kumar (25), was shot dead allegedly by a home guard jawan, Murari Singh, here on Thursday. Sunil was at his shop near Lakhandei bridge area of the town when the home guard jawan came there. A tiff started between them, leading to firing by the home guard by his rifle.
Sunil was immediately rushed to Sadar hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Sunil was a resident of Basbaria locality of the town and had been running his shop for more than five years.
Police have arrested the home guard jawan and his interrogation was going on.
After the trader's death, local residents and supporters of the deceased blocked Mehsaul Chowk for several hours, causing hardship to daily commuters. The protesters raised slogans against the administration. On the assurance of SP Hari Prasath S, the blockade was lifted.
ADG (HQ) Sunil Kumar said in Patna, "The home guard has been arrested and his rifle seized. However, it appeared to be a case of accidental firing."

In another case of violence in the town that took place at Mohanpur Chowk on Thursday, a hardware shopkeeper, Rajiv Purvey, sustained three bullet injuries. After Rajiv opened his shop in morning, two motorbike-borne unidentified armed criminals came and opened fire on him. They fled from the spot on motor bike brandishing arms.
Police sources said Rajiv has been admitted to a private nursing home, where his condition is stated to be serious. None has been arrested in this connection so far. "Investigation is going on," said a police officer.
