Fitts Rode Monstrous Day-2 Bag To Victory

Compiling a 16-pound average over 3 days at Arkansas' Lake Dardanelle when the water is chillier and more off-color than it should be isn't easy. It's especially difficult when your foundation bag weighs only 7 1/2 pounds.

Jeff Fitts, the 45-year-old owner of a vegetation management company in Florida, staged an epic comeback en route to winning last week's FLW Costa Series event. His rally was spurred by a tournament-best 24-pound stringer on day 2 that catapulted him from 90th place to 6th. He completed his ascent to the top of the standings with a 17 1/4-pound haul on the final day.

His 48-10 total edged out Arkansan Daniel Kweekul by 12 ounces. The win, which was easily the biggest of his career, was worth $48,000.

Following are some of the specifics.

Practice

Fitts went to Arkansas with the notion that the event would be a full-blown sight-fishing affair. However, he arrived to find the water temperature still in the 50s in most places and the water color leaning hard toward the brown-ish side, so he immediately abandoned that idea.

"I developed two patterns that I thought were very solid," he said. "One was fishing treetops and laydowns with a Strike King lizard and the other was punching and flipping grass mats down close to the state park. There were very few mats, but they all had fish under them.

"Being from Florida, that's what we do on a regular basis. We got a couple of cold fronts during practice and the tournament, and it was textbook for the fish to tuck up under the mats."

Competition

Fitts said his day-1 bag should've been considerably better than it turned out.

"I made a bad mental error that first day," he said. "I went flipping to start with, but the water was up a foot and a half and I couldn't punch anything but the outside edge. I caught one doing that, and then I ran up a creek to fish some treetops.

"I don't know why, but I picked up a rod with 12-pound line on it. I hooked a 5-pounder that swims out of a tree, then goes back in and jumps and breaks the line. I just figured the line had hit the tree, and it cut it. Then I lost two more in the 2 1/2- to 3-pound range.

"I finally caught a keeper," he continued, "but by then I'd burned up the area. I went back to flipping and caught one more."

Proper execution would've produced a bag in the 16- to 17-pound range, but instead he weighed less than half of that.

"That meant I was fishing just to cash a check on day 2. To catch 24 pounds was truly a miracle, and the thing was, I lost a big one that would've put me at 26 or 27. I estimated it at 6 1/2 to 7 pounds."

He caught that entire bag flipping the mats. He couldn't have run up the creek even if he'd wanted to, as an electrical issue with his big motor forced him to remain in the vicinity of the launch.

"I knew there was plenty of fish there, so I just stayed close and caught them. I was ecstatic – just blown away. I thought it would take close to 30 pounds to make the (Top-10) cut and I figured I had 23 in the boat, so I was thinking I'd be right on the bubble, depending on how other people caught them.

"When I got back in, there was nobody in the bag line and usually it takes 30 minutes just go get a (weigh-in) bag. I thought, Gosh, nobody caught them today. To go from 90th place to 6th in one day is an amazing feeling."

He went into the final day nearly 7 pounds behind leader Todd Castledine, so he thought his chances of winning were pretty slim. A service crew had repaired his motor and he had the option of doing whatever he chose, and he elected to stick with the nearby mats even though he'd hit them hard the previous day.

He lost a big one right away, then didn't get a bite for the next 2 hours. Things were so slow that he began to relish in the fact that that he'd at least made the cut after such a bad day 1.

He opted to try a couple of pockets he'd found that were situated behind rip-rap bridges. The larger of the two gave him four keepers, including a 4 1/2-pounder, before the action died. He moved to the smaller one, which he described as being less than an acre in size, but had no success there.

He went back to the first pocket, but didn't get a bite. He returned to the smaller one and caught a 5-pounder with 20 minutes to go that provided his winning margin.

"I didn't think I had enough," he said. "I figured I had 15 1/2 or 16 pounds and I had one fish that was barely touching the (minimum-length) line. Castledine is a very big stick and (eventual 6th-place finisher) Zach King lives there, and I was sure one of those two would catch them. I was really just hoping to move up to at least 3rd.

"When I found out I'd won, gosh, it was just incredible! It was a special moment, I'll tell you that."
