Bhopal: Chavvi Bhardwaj, a 2008 batch IAS officer and currently collector Dindori, has been appointed as new Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner.
Bhardwaj, who is likely to take charge on April 18, would be the first woman to hold charge of the BMC commissioner. She will be replacing Tejaswi Naik who will now be the additional commissioner, urban administration and environment department.
Speaking to TOI, Bhardwaj said, "Bhopal has improved on various parameters in the recent past. With focused infrastructure development and improved service delivery, Bhopal could well be in the list of top 10 cities of the country."
Earlier this year, state capital improved urban sanitation index drastically and was ranked 21 in the Union ministry of urban development survey, 'Swachh Survekshan-2016'. City's selection in Union government's first phase of smart cities mission is a huge opportunity and challenge, she added.
As BMC commissioner, Bhardwaj would also hold executive powers (including financial) in the Bhopal Smart City Development Corporation Limited (BSCDCL). Projects worth Rs 1,000 crore are likely to take off under the smart city project in 2016. Laying out her vision for the civic body, Bhardwaj said her focus would be on various state government and centrally assisted schemes. New wave of development is also urban specific. By improving efficiency between various BMC divisions, quality of output would be improved, she explained.
