Landmines still affected some 15 percent of population in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), said an official of the Red Cross Society of BiH (RCSBiH) on Tuesday.

Branko Leko, Secretary General of the Red Cross Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina (RCSBiH), noted landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXOs) remained in two-thirds of the country.

The RCSBiH worked to warn people of the dangers of landmines, he continued, adding there were 50 trained instructors in the country for the purpose.

In communities affected by landmines, 13 safe playgrounds were build for children, said Leko.

Dangers of landmines only increased after the flooding in 2014, in which some landmines were surfaced and relocated by floods.

Some 120,000 mines and UXOs were still to be found in BiH, most of from the 1990s war, according to Mine Action Centre of BiH. Endit
