The increasing use of aluminium and other new materials in vehicle construction, means that bodyshops need to be very aware of differing needs when it comes to the preparation of corrosion sensitive surfaces.

 

These require abrasive products which contain the lowest possible amount of heavy metals to avoid any risks.

 

To meet this demand, Mirka is now the first abrasive company providing a full range of non-corrosive products. These were on display for the first time at the ABP Show in Manchester. The full range of products includes everything from net to paper based and non-woven discs and sheets. Also on display was a complete Non-Corrosive Solution Kit complete with abrasives, equipment, accessories and a convenient storage trolley.

 

Mirka say the use of NC products will grow, as traditional abrasives contain significant amounts of heavy metals, such as iron, chromium and copper. During the sanding operation, impurities can contaminate the aluminium surface and any small scratches or defects in the paint or oxide layer (eloxated aluminium), which occur after finishing, can trigger the corrosion process. Parts of the car body, such as bonnets and lower panels, which are exposed to stone chipping, are also at risk.

 

Special raw materials containing the lowest possible amounts of heavy metal contaminants have been used in the Mirka NC product range, while unique procedures have been applied throughout the production process to reduce the metal contents and ensure a stable quality. Due to the construction, the NC products show significant lower heavy metal contents than the corresponding traditional products, greatly reducing the risk of contamination and subsequent corrosion.

 

The Mirka NC range will be introduced in April.
