Won’t bow to political pressure on Mhadei river row: Goa CM Parsekar

"Political parties in Goa are united on the issue. Time and again we have made our stand clear that we will not allow diversion of the water,"Laxmikant Parsekar said.

Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has said that the state will not bow to any political pressure
over the diversion of Mhadei river water by neighbouring Karnataka.

“Let Karnataka do whatever it wants. We are not bothered.Goa will not fall for any political pressure,” Parsekar said, reacting to the statement by his counterpart in Karnataka government that they will seek the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Mhadei river diversion issue.

Karnataka has began work on dams on Mhadei river on its borders which has been opposed by Goa, located downstream.

When asked whether Goa government will also meet PM on the issue, Parsekar said, “We will not follow what Karnataka is doing.”

“Let them do whatever they want to,” he said.

Goa government has been objecting to Karnataka’s plans to divert the water from Mhadei basin to Malprabha by constructing dams.

During the recently-held Assembly session, the Goa Chief Minister had also expressed resentment over the Centre’s move to transfer the dispute over Mhadei river to Inter-State River Water Dispute Tribunal from the existing Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal.
