Sabine Lisicki eases through in Charleston

Sabine Lisicki coasted into the second round of the Volvo Car Open in Charleston with a 6-4 6-3 victory over Irina Falconi.

The 15th-seeded 2009 champion returned to the scene of her first career title and despite serving seven double faults cashed in on all four of her break points to advance.

Number 11 seed Kristina Mladenovic ended a four-match losing run with a 6-4 6-3 win over Tatjana Maria, while Mirjana Lucic-Baroni encountered little problem in seeing off Peng Shuai with a 6-2 6-1 triumph.

Irina-Camelia Begu edged past Caroline Garcia with a 6-2 2-6 7-6 (7/3) victory and Lara Arruabarrena booked a date with top seed Angelique Kerber after beating American wildcard Shelby Rogers 6-4 3-6 6-4.

Kateryna Bondarenko came back from a set down to shock the number 16 seed Misaki Doi 4-6 6-3 6-1, while the 12th-seeded Daria Gavrilova overcame a second-set wobble to defeat Zarina Diyas 6-1 1-6 6-3.

Danka Kovinic beat Cagla Buyukakacay 6-1 6-3 and qualifier Elena Vesnina recorded a 7-5 6-2 win over Cindy Burger.
