Officials with West Edmonton Mall Marine Life are leaving it up to their social media followers to name the newest member of their African penguin colony.

On Monday, WEM said the second chick in just over a year had hatched on March 10 to parents Sweet Pea, 13, and Bam Bam, 12 – and said the little penguin was doing well. The same pair of penguins are also parents to Neo, who hatched on November 25, 2014.

According to officials, the chick is the 12th African penguin to hatch at the mall, bringing the population of their colony to 20.

The African penguin is an endangered species, experts say the species could be extinct in the wild by 2040 – West Edmonton Mall has been participating in a conservation plan called the African Penguin Species Survival Plan since 1986.

Marine Life is inviting followers to their Facebook page a chance to name the chick – name suggestions can be submitted to their page. The chosen entry will receive a three-month pass to mall attractions.

It’s hoped the chick will venture outside the nesting area soon.
