Navsari: 24 held for rioting

Last Friday, a youth, identified as Ankush Patel (18), was allegedly beaten up by five people from another community.

Twenty-fouR people, including four women, have been arrested in connection with a clash between two communities in Vansda town of Navsari district following India’s loss to West Indies in the World T20 semifinal last week, police said Monday. They all have been sent to judicial custody.

Last Friday, a youth, identified as Ankush Patel (18), was allegedly beaten up by five people from another community. Following this, a mob had ransacked shops, mosques and broke vehicles and hand-carts on the main road of Vansda.

Patel and his two friends were returning home in Champawadi area of the town after playing cricket when the altercation took place. According to police, there was an altercation between members of the two communities in Champawadi area after India lost the match.

VHP and Bajrang Dal had declared a bandh Saturday, following which police arrested six people, who were booked for rioting and damaging public property. A counter-complaint was filed by one Javed Shaikh whose shop was burnt during the violence. Later, 18 more people, including four women, from both communities were arrested for alleged rioting.
