Abou Diaby unable to prevent Marseille defeat in first start for Ligue 1 club

Marseille midfielder Abou Diaby believes his team are in a relegation battle after their latest defeat at Bastia.

Having featured as a substitute in a 5-2 loss at home to Rennes before the international break, the former Arsenal player was handed a place in Marseille's starting XI for their 2-1 defeat in Corsica on Sunday.

The 2010 French champions have now gone eight league games without a win and are six points above the relegation zone with six games left to play.

When asked if his team had now been sucked into the fight to stay in the top flight, Diaby, 29, told BeIN Sports that there was no other way of looking at the situation.

"In light of the standings and our results -- yes, that's the case," he said. "But we'll have to react quickly to try to get some points.

"There's a huge amount of frustration because we lost today and we had come off a defeat too.

"We're having difficulty winning matches. That's a fact but we'll have to react quickly."

Diaby joined Marseille last summer after nine years at Arsenal. Sunday's game marked the former France international's first competitive start since he tore his cruciate ligament while playing for the Gunners against Swansea just over three years ago.

Meanwhile, police were present at the airport in case Marseille's players were targeted by irate supporters on their return to the city following the Bastia game.

Beleaguered manager Michel was set for a crisis meeting in Zurich on Monday with the club's owner Margarita Louis-Dreyfus and president Vincent Labrune.
