QUETTA: Health authorities will use the injectable polio vaccine (IPV) in the inoculation drive starting Monday (today) in three high risk districts of Balochistan.

The latest campaign will be carried out in two phases in the area where the epidemic polio virus is still active, said Provincial Coordinator Polio Programme Dr Saifur Rehman.

The IPV programme will be launched in Quetta, Pishin and Killa Abdullah and nearly 239,199 children would be injected against the crippling virus, he said.

“The first campaign will run from April 4 to 12, targeting more than 150,842 children in the provincial capital, 41,898 in Pishin and 46,450 in Killa Abdullah,” Dr Saif added.

The second phase will run between April 13 and April 20 in Killa Abdullah and Gulistan tehsils of the Killa Abdullah district which borders Afghanistan. It is known more for parental resistance to polio vaccination for children.

“Around 649 temporary vaccination outreach centres will be established in Quetta block,” Dr Saif said.

Balochistan’s first polio case of 2016 was reported in Quetta city in February.

With the number of polio cases falling in Pakistan this year, as is evident from the seven polio patients catalogued so far, the federal and provincial governments are increasingly upbeat about winning the war against polio.
