Chennai: Three close relatives of late Congress leader K Kamaraj, including T S K Mayuri Kannan, joined DMK in the presence of its treasurer M K Stalin at Anna Arivalayam, the party headquarters. Mayuri is the grand daughter of Kamaraj father's brother Annamalai Nadar.
Kamaraj during his tenure as chief minister fought the DMK tooth and nail and eventually lost to a DMK student leader P Sreenivasan in the 1967 assembly election.
It is ironical that his family members have decided to join the party he had opposed so strongly. Along with Mayuri, Chandra, daughter of Kamaraj's younger brother, also joined the DMK, a statement issued by the party said. Mayuri was with BJP earlier but quit the party as she got little recognition.
Speaking to mediapersons after joining the DMK, Mayuri said she would campaign for DMK in the southern districts during the assembly election.
