A seven-day special camp organised by the NSS unit of Fisheries College and Research Institute here began at Kombuthurai, a fishing village near Kayalpattinam, on Thursday.
The camp would have programmes such as training on value-addition to fish, eye screening camp, voter awareness, health and hygiene, conservation of turtles, preparation of Sashimi-grade tuna, tuberculosis, total sanitation, competitions and English tuitions for school children. Dean G. Sugumar said in a statement that during the stay the volunteers would get an opportunity to observe the contributions of fishermen and their hardships.
R. Amal Xavier, Joint Director of Fisheries, and chief guest of the inaugural function, lauded the Kombuthurai fishermen for their eco-friendly fishing methods and commitment towards sustainable fishing. P. Isaac Jeyakumar, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Joseph Raj, president of Kombuthurai panchayat, Poongothai, Headmistress of Panchayat Union Middle School spoke.
M. Muruganandam, Assistant Professor and NSS Programme Officer, welcomed the gathering while A. Tamilarasu, NSS secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.
