Patna: The then principal secretary (health), Amarjeet Sinha, and then Araria SP Shivdeep Lande's stand on violation of medical norms during a sterilization camp held at Kaparfora panchayat in Araria district on January 7, 2012, almost proved correct on Tuesday when the Supreme Court rapped an NGO, Jai Ambe Welfare Society, which organized the camp. As many as 53 women were sterilized by a single surgeon in just two hours at the camp held in classrooms of the Kaparfora Government Middle School.
The PIL filed in the Supreme Court said, "Without proper use of anaesthesia, a number of women were reported to be conscious and in pain while being operated." After the surgery was complete, the petition said, patients were made to lie on straw mats in unbearable pain, bleeding profusely. None of the women were provided any medical assistance post-surgery. The school didn't even have safe drinking water facility for the patients. It had also been reported that one of the painkillers had expired.
The then DM's report to health department had said that prima facie, the sterilizations seemed to be successful with all norms followed. "However, out of seven tablets given, one (Nimesulide) was expired." The batch of drug in question expired in December 2011 while the surgery was performed in January 2012. tnn
However, the claims had been disputed by civil society organizations. Post-controversy, the services of Jai Ambe Welfare Society were terminated by the government.
