New Delhi: A 62-year-old woman, identified as Kamaljeet Kaur, was severely injured when she allegedly attempted suicide and jumped in front of a Metro train at Chandni Chowk station on the Yellow line, on Wednesday afternoon. Police said that a suicide note citing financial constraints as a reason was also recovered from the lady, whose left leg had to be amputated.
The incident took place around 12.10am. According to the witnesses, the lady had been roaming at the platform for fifteen minutes and suddenly jumped in front of a train heading towards Huda City Centre. The incident led to the disruption of metro service for about 15 minutes.
"According to the CCTV footage, it was at 12.10pm that a train entered Chandni Chowk station and the woman, who was standing near the position of the ladies coach, jumped in front of the train. The driver applied emergency brakes but by that time the woman had already been run over by two coaches of the train. She was pulled out of the tracks in an unconscious state but her one leg was completely ruptured," said a senior police official.
The woman was then rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital and was referred to Sushrut Trauma Centre for immediate surgery. Her son, Inderdeep Singh (33), who owns a shop in Chandni Chowk was immediately informed about the incident. However, Singh said that he couldn't believe her mother attempted suicide because of financial reasons.
"Police are also telling that a suicide note was recovered but for me it's hard to believe the fact. My father passed away years ago, since then I have been living with my mother at our west Delhi residence," he said.

Police are verifying the incident and investigating if someone had pushed her. CCTV footage are being scanned and witnesses being questioned to ascertain the facts, they said. "Family members and relatives of the victim are also being questioned to find out if there was some family reasons behind her drastic step," said an official.
