Armed men, suspected to be members of Mozambique's main opposition Renamo attacked a convoy of the government delegation of the central province of Manica, injuring three policemen, local radio reported on Tuesday.

The state Radio Mozambique said in its report that the ambush took place on Monday in the Barue district, when the convoy led by a provincial labor official was returning to the provincial capital, Chimoio.

The station quoted the head of the provincial public relations for Manica police command, Bernardo Colher, said that three people injured slightly.

"We have no evidence that they were armed Renamo men, who were disguising as ordinary population, and then commit these acts," he said, adding that three policemen had minor injuries.

According to him, the three were rescued and rushed to a local hospital for treatment and they are not in danger now.

Manica used to be one of Renamo's strongholds shortly after peace was achieved in 1992 in the southern African country. But in last general elections held in 2014, the ruling Frelimo party won the most votes in the province. Endit
