This Telugu director started his career in 2008 with Gamyam and with his sixth film, has bagged the National Award for Best Telugu Film for Kanche. In an exclusive chat with dna, director Krish talks about the award, Kanche and more.

How do you feel after winning your first National Award?

I feel it is a pat on my back. It's very exciting. This is a story I have been wanting to tell for a long time. There are more than 2.5 million Indian soldiers who were part of the allied forces during the World War. They also fought against the Japanese and in Italy as well. There are so many stories around this and we picked up this particular story for Kanche. The National Award is great appreciation for the story and I am happy that Kanche got the award.

Did you expect a National Award for the film?

As a matter of fact I did. (Laughs) I actually expect it for every film right from Gamyam! But for Kanche it’s the concept. No one has ever told these stories and this is a unique attempt. We have done something like this for the first time in south India. As a matter of fact, no one across India has made a retro war film. I strongly believed in the story. There is so much of hatred and bigotry, but love always prevails. There are so many fights happening based on caste, creed and religion and this is a universal concept. I thought there was a good chance of appreciation but I didn’t expect any particular award. Though I felt the movie will be recognised.

Were you disappointed that you didn’t get Best Director?

It didn’t cross my mind at all. I am happy that my film got recognised and got an award. At the end of the day, that’s the best thing – a nice end to this chapter called Kanche

Baahubali bagged Best Film.

I am very happy with the way the Telugu film industry is moving. There are films coming out with good content and strong technical aspects. I am happy for Shobu, Prasad and Rajamouli. Shobu and Prasad were in fact the producers of my film Vedam. We thought when Vedam released we might bag some awards. Now, they have won for Baahubali and I have won for Kanche and it’s a good feeling.

What are you working on currently?

I am doing a Telugu film and then a Hindi film with Eros’ Trinity Pictures. We will announce the Telugu film shortly. I am working with Kanche producers Y. Rajeev Reddy and J. Sai Babu on the Telugu film. The Hindi film has been written by Shridhar Raghavan, Dheeraj Rattan and K. Subhash.

Were you happy with your debut Hindi film Gabbar is Back with Akshay Kumar?

I am very happy with that film. It did good business. Now I have another Hindi film. What more do I want?
